Backyard Composting

What Is Composting?

Composting is the natural process of recycling organic materials into nutrient-rich humus that improves soil health.

Most of the work is done by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, molds, earthworms, and insects that break down organic matter naturally.

The 4 Essentials of Successful Composting

1. Balanced Materials

Use a mix of “browns” (carbon-rich materials) and “greens” (nitrogen-rich materials). A ratio of three parts browns to one part greens helps prevent odors and supports healthy decomposition. Chopping or shredding materials speeds up the process.

2. Airflow

Compost needs oxygen to support aerobic organisms. Without enough air, anaerobic organisms can create unpleasant odors.

3. Moisture

Compost should stay about as moist as a wrung-out sponge. Too little moisture slows decomposition.

4. Proper Size

A compost pile should be at least 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet to retain enough heat for effective decomposition.

Curbside Compost Collection

If backyard composting isn't for you, try one of these residential collectors who will pick up your food waste right at your house!

Most curbside compost collectors require a minimum amount of willing participants before they can start a curbside collection program in a new town. Although we cannot make recommendations, here are a few companies to start your search:

Black Earth

Black Earth currently services Medway residents.

Bootstrap Compost

Bootstrap Compost needs 20 subscribers and they can start picking up in Medway.

Garbage to Garden

Garbage to Garden is based in Portland, ME and services Maine and some cities in northern Massachusetts.
