Relationship Between Total Population and School-Aged Population

2000 2010 2020 Absolute Change (2000–2020) Percent Change (2000–2020)
Medway – Total Pop.12,44812,75213,115+667+5.4%
Medway – School Pop.2,6892,6402,074−615−22%

Although the population of Medway has experienced a slight uptick since the turn of the century, the school aged population has decreased by over 20% in the same time period. Shifting age cohort demographics, declining fertility rates (amongst certain groups), and statewide in-migration/out-migration trends have contributed to this phenomenon. Although it seems counterituitive, many other communities in Eastern Massachusetts are exhibiting similar population vs. school aged population trends.

The amount of tax revenue generated by The Hathon is nearly 10x greater than that of the vacant parcels where the Heritage on Main project is proposed. At a projected 267 units with several commercial properties onsite, the Heritage on Main project would eclipse The Hathon as the third largest tax revenue generator for the town and signify a vast improvement in asset performance.
