All of us in the Town of Medway wish nothing more than for all of our residents to be safe. When heading out on a frozen lake to skate or fish, please remember that ice is unpredictable and never 100% safe.
With this in mind, we would like to share some very important tips:
- Check the color, “ice that is thick and blue is likely tried and true, but if it is thin and crispy, it’s way too risky.”
- Look for cracks. Cracks and deformities indicate weakening ice.
- Shake a stick at it. Ice conditions change daily, it may be thick in one spot and weak in another.
- Safety in numbers. Never go on the ice alone.
- Scouts’ Motto. Be prepared and follow your instincts.
