Medway Fire Department Responds to Transformer Failure & Oill Spill at Grid, LLC Facility

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Medway Fire Department Responds to Transformer Failure and Oil Spill at Grid LLC Facility

MEDWAY, MA, June 17, 2026 – At approximately 8:27 a.m. this morning, the Medway Fire Department was dispatched to 49 Milford Street, Grid LLC, for a reported trouble alarm. While units were responding, Medway Fire Headquarters received a direct call from a site representative with QE Solar reporting a failure of the main transformer that services the facility.

Engine 3 arrived on scene and confirmed that the main transformer had experienced failure and was actively leaking oil. Based on the conditions observed, the incident response was upgraded, and additional resources were requested.

Fire department personnel immediately implemented precautionary measures and worked closely with facility representatives to develop and execute a mitigation plan. The affected transformer contains FR3 insulating mineral oil, a biodegradable and non-toxic transformer coolant.  At no time during the incident was the public in danger.  The facility’s engineered safety and containment systems functioned as designed, successfully containing the fluid within the designated containment area and preventing any off-site impact.

A specialized environmental cleanup contractor arrived on scene within two hours of the incident and began remediation efforts. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) was notified and responded to the scene to assist with oversight and monitoring.

Power to the facility has been safely de-energized and that status has been confirmed with Eversource. Additionally, all battery energy storage system packs at the site have been placed in a lockout condition as a precautionary measure.

During the transformer failure, one worker sustained injuries and was transported to Milford Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cleanup operations will continue, and Medway Fire Department personnel will monitor the remediation process until the spill has been fully mitigated.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
