Medway Animal Control would like to notify the community that a raccoon observed to be acting strangely and had an altercation with a dog has tested POSITIVE for rabies.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects mammals and can be spread from animals to humans through a bite or scratch or contact with the saliva of a rabid animal. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, but it’s preventable with timely and appropriate treatment. In Massachusetts, rabies is frequently found in raccoons, foxes, skunks, and bats.

If you notice a wild animal acting strange (i.e., circling, falling over, staggering, hind limb paralysis, excessive vocalizing, seizing, teeth chattering), please get in touch with Animal Control at 508-533-3251.

REMINDERS: Please ensure your dogs, ferrets, and cats are vaccinated for rabies.

Do not approach, handle or feed wild or stray animals.

Do not leave pets outside unattended or allow them to roam free.
