What is the Community Choice Power Supply Program?

The Community Choice Power Supply Program, also known as municipal aggregation, allows local government to combine the purchasing power of its residents to achieve savings on electricity costs. In doing so, it creates competition among suppliers which helps ensure aggressive rates. Consumers are no longer “stuck” with the cost and fluctuation of basic service rates because the program offers them another option.

Medway’s Current Municipal Aggregation Program – Expires September 2026

Through competitive bidding, Medway selected Direct Energy Services as the electricity supplier. Residents can expect to pay $0.1214 per kwh throughout the duration of the program, which will run from March 2025 through September 2026.

This default rate meets the Massachusetts renewable energy requirements, which is 63% renewable (69% renewable in 2026.)

Renewable Energy Content

In addition to the default rate option, Medway residents who wish to purchase electricity with a higher renewable energy content may opt-in to Product #2 listed below. Although the cost of  Product #2 is higher than the default rate, this option allows residents to purchase 100% locally sourced renewable energy content.

Medway is offering two products with varying amounts of renewable energy content.

*Eversource’s Residential Basic Service meets MA renewable energy requirements and is in effect from August 1, 2025 - January 31, 2026. Assuming usage of 600-kilowatt hours of electricity per month, residents can expect to see an average savings for that period.

How to Participate

IF YOU DO NOTHING, you will be automatically enrolled in Product #1. This product is identical to the Eversource, except it's cheaper because the Town was able to aggregate. Beginning with the March 2025 meter reads, you will see immediate savings using the new Product #1 vs staying with Eversource

IF YOU WANT 100% locally sourced renewable power, you may OPT-IN to Product #2

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE in the program, you must OPT-OUT.

To Opt-Out you can fill out the Opt-Out Form at colonialpowergroup.com/medway OR call Direct Energy at (866) 968-8062 and ask to be placed on the Eversource Basic Service, OR call Colonial Power Group at (866) 485-5858 ext. 1.

Residents will not notice any change in their electricity service. The only discernible difference will be that Direct Energy Services of Houston, Texas, will be printed under “Supplier Services” on Eversource’s monthly bills starting in April 2025. Residents and small business owners will continue to receive one bill from Eversource and to send payments to Eversource for processing. There will be no interruption in billing, power, or customer service.

There are no enrollment, early termination, or cancellation fees attached to the Medway electricity program. Residents who choose to opt-out can also opt-in at a later date if they so choose at no cost. However, anyone switching from a contract with a third-party supplier may be subject to penalties or early termination fees charged by that supplier. Ratepayers should verify terms before switching.

Basic Service rates change twice a year or more, depending on rate class. As a result, the aggregation rate may not always be lower than the Basic Service rate. The goal of the aggregation is to deliver savings over the life of the program against Eversource’s Basic Service. However, future savings cannot be guaranteed.
