Medway Fire Department Responds to a Structure Fire on Evergreen Street in Medway

Medway, MA — At approximately 11:36 a.m. on December 15th, the Medway Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Evergreen Street for multiple reports of a building fire.

Upon arrival, the crew encountered a heavily involved, single-story detached garage with fire impinging on a nearby residence located approximately 20 feet away. A working fire assignment was transmitted, bringing in mutual aid resources including a ladder company from Millis, engines from Bellingham and Norfolk, and a Hopedale ambulance to the scene. Engines from Milford and Medfield provided station coverage for the Town of Medway. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the exterior fire conditions threatening the adjacent home before shifting operations to the detached garage. The fire was brought under control within approximately 40 minutes. There was no extension of fire into the interior of the nearby residence; however, the detached garage was a total loss.

One occupant was transported by a Millis ambulance to Milford Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of smoke inhalation. Medway/Millis Animal Control was also notified, as a total of eight cats succumbed to the fire.

The Medway Fire Department would like to thank all mutual aid partners for their prompt assistance, as well as the Providence Canteen for providing firefighter rehabilitation services at the scene.

Fire Safety Reminder: The Medway Fire Department reminds residents to ensure all structures have working smoke alarms, maintain proper clearance around buildings, and immediately call 911 at the first sign of smoke or fire. Early notification and functioning alarms are critical in preventing injuries and limiting the spread of fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
