Representative Joseph Kennedy was the honored guest at Medway Community Farm today, Thursday, August 1st. Medway Community Farm President Carol Collard thanked town officials, the Medway community, members of the legislature, and the 100's of volunteers that have made the farm what it is today! Ms. Collard spoke about the collaboration with Medway Public Schools. Amanda Liuizzi, Principal of Medway Memorial School was in attendance with several 4th grade students to talk about the program that is run thru the school. She explained that because of the tremendous popularity of the program, it has been opened up to all students in the 4th grade. The students learn to grow their own food and as part of their science classes they learn what is in the food they grow and get to eat it! Did you know that one of the gardens that the children tend to at the farm is specifically to grow food to be donated to the Medway Food Pantry? So cool! Ms. Collard also spoke about the farm's collaboration with the Go Green Club at the high school level. Many 4th grade students, Go Green Club members and Democratic Club members were in attendance as well as many volunteers!
Speaking of volunteers, this year's volunteers have worked extremely hard to beautify the farm. Many (100's) have come from corporate sponsors who send "people power" to help in times of need with weeding, etc. It was enforced that although they are very thankful for the many volunteers that have helped over the years, there is always room to expand and volunteers are always welcome!
