
The Town of Medway seeks qualified applicants for the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Deputy Director of Public Works assists the Director with managing the following divisions: Highway and stormwater management, Solid Waste, Water, Wastewater, Parks, Fleet, and Facilities Maintenance. Assists in the formulation of Public Works policies, coordinates and advises Division Superintendents, and serves as the Acting Director in the absence of the Director. A major portion of the work involves facilitating and supporting the work of the Public Works Director by supervising day-to-day service activities and by providing a professional-level resource for related functions and operational responsibilities.
Serves as the Program Manager for long-term improvement initiatives and as the Department's lead or alternate representative with other Town Departments, multiple committees, and boards internal to the Town, and external public bodies. Develop and foster an environment focused on customer service and responsiveness to community inquiries.
Acts as the point of technical authority for operation and maintenance activities and technical problem-solving. Assists in directing and coordinating work plans by assigning projects and areas of responsibility, evaluating work methods and procedures, identifying and resolving problems, assessing and monitoring workloads, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships to identify opportunities for improvement and directing and implementing changes.
Conducts safety meetings and inspections for maintenance and operational staff. Provides documentation related to all safety issues. Ensures all facilities and operations/maintenance programs comply with applicable federal, state, and local ordinances and regulations. Direct field operations during emergency response and manage and supervise employees.
Oversee the preparation of engineering plans and specifications, bidding, competency of contractors and vendors, and the selection criteria for public contracts administered or managed by the Department. Oversee project management for the construction of assigned Public Works projects. Oversee assigned projects to ensure contractor compliance with scope, schedule, and budget. Coordinate the preparation of reviews and updates to street maps (GIS), storm drainage maps, databases, and comprehensive plans. Prepare composite reports from individual reports of subordinates.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related field; Master’s Degree preferred; 7 to 10 years progressively responsible experience in municipal public works construction, maintenance of equipment, and engineering; 5 to 7 years in supervisory/management capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
